It’s being reported that Celtic are planning to make a move for Blackburn Goalkeeper Balázs Tóth after initial talks took place around a deal for the Hungarian international. Blackburn are reported to be resigned to losing the 28-year-old after he made it clear he wouldn’t be signing a new deal at the Championship side. With one year left on his contract, Blackburn are reportedly looking for a fee of around £3-4 million pounds for their no1. Tony Mowbray has indicated that he will not stand in his Goalkeeper’s way if a deal can be struck between the two clubs.
Blackburn’s boss was quoted as saying “ I want them all to enjoy their careers. It’s very short. Football gives you some of your best moments in your life, apart from the day you marry your beautiful wife or you have your children. If the goalie wants to go and do it somewhere else and win trophies and play in the Champions League, who am I to tell him he shouldn’t do that?”
The former Celtic manager will understand what Tóth will experience if he does indeed join the club this summer.
What does that mean for the Celtic squad?
It’s unlikely that Celtic would be considering signing a £3-4million goalkeeper if he was a backup for Sinasalo. You’d think that at that price he is being brought in to at least challenge the Finnish international. Manager Martin O’Neill will be looking for genuine competition for places if Celtic are to challenge on all fronts this season. Tóth was voted Blackburns players player of the year last season and seems to be popular with the fan base. Could he be earmarked to be brought in as Celtic’s no1? Do the club feel Sinasalo is not ready to be the no1 goalkeeper for Celtic? You would think at 28 years old that Tóth would be coming in to play at this stage of his career. Although Sinasalo won’t be keen on returning to the Celtic bench either. Creating a proper dilemma for the Celtic manager if Tóth does indeed sign.
