Celtic revive interest in Canadian international Niko Sigur
The Daily Record is reporting that Celtic are considering a move for Canadian international Niko Sigur. Celtic were previously linked with a move for the Hajduk Split midfielder earlier in the window but now seem set to make their move. With further reinforcements needed in midfield, Sigur would be seen as a positive addition to the Celtic ranks this summer. According to the report, Sigur is open to the move and a deal is there to be done for the defensive midfielder.
Who is Niko Sigur?
Sigur was born in Canada but developed his football career in Croatia and currently plays for Hajduk Split.
He is capable of operating at right-back but his natural position is defensive centre midfield. The 22 year old has represented Canada internationally and was part of the world cup squad at this summers tournament. He earned rave reviews for his performance against Morocco in the last 16.
He is a defensive midfielder with strong positional sense who would give the club additional support for McGregor this season in the deep lying position. The timing of Celtic’s renewed interest will evoke discussion around his international team mate Alistair Johnston’s future at the club.
Johnston has been linked with a move to Everton this summer so it is yet to be seen whether the international teammates will be together at Celtic when the window closes.
The Sigur story comes as Celtic appear to be making progress elsewhere in the market. A deal worth up to £6.8m has reportedly been agreed for Paderborn midfielder Mika Baur, with the 22-year-old expected to travel to the UK for a medical.
Midfield Reinforcements
Now Sigur has re-emerged as another potential midfield target. Potentially as a replacement for the likes of Engles and Hatate who are still tipped to leave the club this window. Regardless, it’s being reported that Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson is due to open up talks with the Croatian club to see if they can agree a fee. Celtic have also been linked with Lithuanian centre mid Gvidas Gineitis but a move now looks unlikely for the Torino man.
What do you think Celtic fans? Is Sigur one you would like through the door at Celtic Park?
