If you haven’t seen Seamus Coleman’s appearance on the Overlap then I recommend you watch it. I tuned in to see whether they mentioned his infamous Celtic trial under Gordon Strachan, where the club and the manager decided not to sign the right back. As most people know, Coleman went on to sign for Everton for a tiny fee of £60,000. What could have been. Coleman went on to serve Everton and his country brilliantly for 17 years. As it happens, they did not mention his Celtic trial on the show, they don’t often go out of their way to promote or talk about Scottish football if they can help it. I did come away from watching the show thinking the club could use the Irishman now in some sort of coaching capacity. Could Martin O’Neill use his experience now in a backroom role? We saw the likes of Neil Lennon, Damien Duff and Harry Kewell get their coaching starts at the club, so why not Coleman as well?
The two men have working history
Martin O’Neill was Coleman’s manager during his time in charge of Ireland’s national side. So you would think there was some sort of working relationship there. What impressed me about the interview was how seriously the player took his role at Everton. As captain, he lived every moment of those relegation scraps and seems to have taken his responsibility seriously. A quality I’m not so sure the modern footballer possesses as often as they did in the past. The leadership qualities that Seamus seems to have reminds me of Callum McGregor. I would be surprised if the manager didn’t want more of those qualities in his backroom team as well. With his background playing in the premier league and Ireland he’s likely to command respect from the players from day one. His humility, standards and attitude seem like qualities that would greatly benefit the club in my opinion. With the shared history between O’Neill and Coleman it certainly seems like the club should at least be having a conversation with the Donegal man.
Coleman is unsure of future plans
Coleman did tell the panel that Everton wanted to keep him on behind the scenes in some sort of capacity, but he needed a proper break after being at the club for so long. He also stated that he hasn’t officially given up on his playing career yet. Although he hinted that retirement might be confirmed in the next couple of weeks or so. I wouldn’t be overly surprised to see Coleman at Celtic Park in some capacity if O’Neill plans to stay on longer than this season. I still think a return to Everton is likely considering his family roots in the city and the love he has for the club. Sadly we missed out on him as player, do we want to do the same as a coach?
