Celtic’s Champions League curveball

Celtic will find out who they face in this seasons Champions League Playoff Round when the draw is made on Monday. Polish side Lech Poznan were eliminated on penalties last night which means that Greek champions AEK Athens will no longer be a possible opponent for the hoops. Athens previously knocked out Celtic in qualifying 2018 and will now be seeded alongside Celtic for the draw.

Celtic will now come up against one of

• Viking Stavanger of Norway,

• Lask Linz of Austria,

• NK Celje of Slovenia or FC Aarat- Armenia of Armenia,

• Kairat Almaty of Kazakstan or Levski Sofia of Bulgaria,

• Aarhus (AGF) of Denmark or Sabah of Azerbaijan.

Not having to face the Greek club will be seen as somewhat of a boost ahead of a difficult start to the season. Celtic will most likely go into any possible scenario as the favourites but there is one potential tie that will stand out to the support. A possible rematch of last year’s qualifier where Celtic were knocked out by Kazakhstani champions Kairat Almaty. It’s not yet known whether Celtic will play at home or away first.

The club will want to make sure they are full prepared for the notoriously tricky Champions League playoff qualifier regardless of who they are drawn against on Monday.
