Five SPFL players Celtic could consider signing this window

Celtic have traditionally done well signing players from fellow SPFL clubs. Just look at the impact the likes of Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong and Didier Agathe had at the club. In the past, Celtic have identified players in the league that they think would make a positive impact and made a move before anyone else.

In recent years, the club seems to have been implemented a different strategy. Several top players have been allowed to leave the league, some to England, some to Serie A. For some reason, For some reason, Celtic have been reluctant to pay what the selling clubs in the SPFL have requested. The likes of John McGinn and Lennon Miller come to mind. With the squad needing fresh blood, it’s possible the club look closer to home for future additions. If they do decide to look at the domestic market then there are a few names they could look towards this window.

1. Josh Mulligan (Hibs)

Josh Mulligan impressed for Hibs last season after his free transfer move from Dundee. Some fans wanted the club to look at the midfielder then before his move to Edinburgh. It was also rumoured that he was in line for a move to Ibrox if Barry Ferguson took the job at Rangers. Mulligan’s power and versatility in midfield would make him an interesting option should the club look at making an offer. Maybe the fact he was in and out of the team due to injury will stop Celtic from paying the kind of money that the Leith club would be looking for. He’s certainly one to keep an eye out with several midfielders expected to leave Celtic this summer.

2. Claudio Braga (Heart of Midlothian)

The Hearts no10 excelled for the league contenders last season after his move from the Norwegian second division. The Portuguese playmaker won player of the year in Scotland and received many plaudits throughout the country for his performances in the league. He could potentially be one to watch if Celtic sell Nygren and need to recruit a no10 goalscorer. Whether Hearts would sell to the Scottish champions is another matter. A good player with genuine quality and goalscoring abilities.

3. Tawanda Maswanhise (Motherwell)

Celtic were linked with a move for the Motherwell forward in January when he was top of the goalscoring charts in the league. The former Leicester youngster can play through the middle or on the right, where Celtic are looking for reinforcements. His pace, direct running and goalscoring ability might be attractive to the club again as we move through the window. We’ll have to see if they make a move or if their interest faded in January after Martin O’Neill and Mark Fotheringham went to see him live.

4. Miguel Chaiwa (Hibs)

Chaiwa was another Hibs midfielder who impressed last season after making the move from Young boys in Switzerland. The 22 year old Zambian midfielder is the kind of deep midfield enforcer the club have been looking for some time. Whether Celtic make their move and accept Hibernian’s demands is yet to be seen. He would certainly bring a steel to the midfield that’s been missing in recent years.

5. Will Ferry (Dundee Utd)

Will Ferry impressed for Dundee Utd last season and has almost moved this summer already. So far, the English born Irish left back has yet to leave the club after a strong campaign. Could Celtic make a move to bring in the full back as cover for Tierney? We are yet to see who the club will move for in this position but Ferry would seem to be a possible option.

Will the club look closer to home for players?

Supporters often become excited by signings from overseas, but the Scottish Premiership has repeatedly shown it can produce players capable of making the step up. Whether Celtic will make a move for any of these names is yet to be seen. However, it’s time the club stopped ignoring the talent on its door step and took the best players from the league before they end up elsewhere.
