Martin O’Neill had positive things to say about both Camilo Durán and Thomas Hatton after their performances against AC Milan at Celtic Park on Saturday. The manager was asked what his initial thoughts were after the Columbian striker Durán scored 3 in 3 since arriving from Qarabag in a £6 million pound deal.
“I think he’s a really good player. I think he’s a really good player. If he stays clear of injury I think he’ll be a real asset for us.”
Duran doesn’t appear to have had a track record of injuries so far in his career. It’s therefore likely that the managers just being caution about his new signing.
In terms of Thomas “Tam” Hatton, the manager was quick to praise the 19 year old after his cameo off the bench on Saturday.
“Tam has been with us the whole pre season, same with Sean McArdle, Tam I just congratulated him for his spell on the field, he’s prepared to take people on, its a dying art which is great, so he’ll get all the encouragement in the world. He’s a young lad making his way in the game, really encouraging. He’ll have a battle on trying to get into the side, like anything but I was really impressed with him, as I have with his attitude during pre season.”
High praise from the manager who will likely give the academy graduate further opportunities to impress as we head into the new season.
Opinion
Camilo Durán has clearly been brought in to start games for Celtic this season and will go some way to replacing the pressing energy lost by Daizen Maeda’s closing down. We expect him to feature heavily in Celtic’s front line this season. Tam Hatton’s role is less clear. Will the manager give the youngster further opportunities to impress or will he feel a loan move at this stage will benefit him more? It’s possible the manager decides to keep him around the first team picture due to the lack of quality options in the wide area right now. Unless we sign a few quality wingers there will definitely be the opportunity to impress moving forward.
