If the reports are accurate about Celtic agreeing a club-record deal to sign Kasper Høgh, then that is certainly a welcome piece of news.
The long awaited replacement for Kyogo
All summer the Celtic supporters have been waiting for the club to follow through on promises of a strong summer window to give the squad a much needed rebuild. So far, with only the Columbian Duran being added, the supporters would have expected a lot more with the dreaded Champions League qualifier around the corner. Spending a reported £11 million-plus on a striker would represent a major shift in ambition and send a clear signal that the club are indeed serious about progressing. It would however, only be a strong start and nothing more. Celtic require another five or six additions quality additions if the players we expect to leave do so. Celtic are looking quite weak in midfield and out wide so this is certainly an area the club must strengthen in the coming weeks.
Depth will be crucial this season. You just need to look at the bench against AC Milan to see we don’t have it.
The transfer of Kasper Høgh has the potential to become one of Celtic’s best in years. However we still need a goalkeeper, a left back, a couple of centre mids and at least one winger, maybe two.
More need to follow Høgh through the door
If the club follows up with further quality additions in the positions that need strengthening, supporters could head into the new season believing that this squad is heading in the right direction.
Celtic deserve credit for showing ambition if they get the Høgh deal over the line, now they need to keep delivering additional targets and complete a strong window.
One statement signing can lift the mood around a football club and give the supporters cause for excitement. Now they must kick on and deliver the rest of the window to give O’Neill every chance of success this season.
