The five positions Celtic must strengthen before the transfer window closes

Celtic have spent £17 million on their new look strike force this window but there is still a lot work to be done.

Here are the five positions that the club needs to strengthen before the end of the transfer window.

1. Left-back

It’s clear to see that Celtic need another left back to rival and support Kieran Tierney. Tierney is undoubtedly first choice, however with his injury record, it’s wise to have another strong option that can help support KT by playing a healthy number of games this season. Rumours that Greg Taylor might be coming back to the club will not go away. Whether it’s the former Killie man or a new signing completely, Celtic must strengthen the left back position before the end of this window.

2. Central midfield (X2)

The midfield from last season lacks creativity and needs real quality added before the end of the window. With the likes of Engles and Hatate possibly leaving the club, we need at least two quality centre midfielders that can add a spark and unlock defences this season. If Engels goes for the kind of money thats being talked about, then the club should have no problem reinvesting that money back into the heart of the team. McGregor will need real help this season so hopefully the club add young, dynamic and hungry players who can increase our creativity output. Something we’ve missed since Matt O’Reilly left the club.

3. Goalkeeper

Sinisalo has done well since coming into the side but with Kasper Schmeichel leaving we have no competition or a realistic backup. Celtic must add a quality goalkeeper to the squad this summer that allows them to have two top options for the position throughout the season. The Finland international has done well but we are yet to see if he is ready to cement himself as Celtic no1 this season.

4. Wingers x2

Celtic are only as good as their wingers. With goals and assists expected to come from the wide position it’s imperative that Celtic have high performing wide men if they are to ensure another successful season. Most fans will say that Nicholas Kuhn has yet to be replaced. That’s despite the club spending roughly £10 million on both Tounekti and Balikwisha. Neither seem up to making the position their own so we must recruit wisely in the final weeks. At the very least, a right winger is needed to replace the German who left for Como last summer. However, most Celtic fans will tell you that a left sided player is also needed. Maybe young Hatton will be given a chance after his impressive role in preseason. Although he’s more likely to find himself out on loan instead.

5. Centre-back

Martin O’Neill recently stated that the club would not be looking for another centre back this window. After selling Maik Nawrocki and Benjamin Arthur returning to Brentford, Scales, Trusty and CVV will be the core with fourth option being Dane Murray. Murray has not yet proved himself to be reliable when called upon in key games. The club might not be looking for an additional centre back but I’d add it to the list.

Final thoughts

There is still so much work for Celtic to do this summer with only two signings making it through the door at Celtic Park. A combination of short term and poor planning has left the club a mountain to climb in the last weeks of the window. Realistically we need 7 or 8 people coming in with further outgoings likely. We’ll see whether they manage to get their business done as intended ahead of another demanding season.
