Celtic are still looking for strikers to bring in this window and continue to be linked to several names including Kasper Hogh and Evan Ferguson. If a move for the latter does happen it will take place near the near the end of the window and will likely be a loan deal for the Irish forward.

Evan Ferguson was one of the brightest young strikers to emerge from Ireland in recent years, but his career has stalled since bursting onto the scene with Brighton & Hove Albion. Injuries and fierce competition for places have limited his opportunities, and after a difficult spell away from the Amex, questions are now being asked about what comes next.

That has inevitably led to speculation linking him with Celtic. The club do have a long term interest in the striker and he seems to fit the profile in what Martin O’Neill looks for in a forward. Could O’Neill be the man to resurrect Fergusons career as he did for Chris Sutton?

Martin O’Neill Wants Competition Up Front

Celtic have relied heavily on Daizen Maeda in recent seasons, and with he Japanese forward moving on this summer adding Ferguson would increase the quality of the attacking options while providing a different type of centre-forward for the manager.

His ability to play with his back to goal, link midfield into attack and finish inside the penalty area would offer something different to Celtic’s current striking options.

The Biggest Obstacle Is Money

The obvious issue is salary. Premier League wages are beyond Celtic’s normal structure. Unless Brighton are prepared to subsidise a significant portion of Ferguson’s earnings, a permanent transfer would appear extremely unlikely. A loan, however, changes the equation. It allows Ferguson to play regularly while giving Brighton the opportunity to see him regain form and value. If this does happen then it will likely be later in the window once clubs have done a lot of their business and Brighton are willing to do a deal.

Opinion

At this stage, there is no indication that a deal is close. However I wouldn’t dismiss him coming in late on. My guess is O’Neill would like a Kasper Hogh type along with an Evan Ferguson when he needs to mix it up in Europe. If the opportunity presents itself, this is one transfer Celtic will probably explore. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the club make moves for both Hogh and Ferguson this window. Could we see both at Celtic Park this summer?
