Here we find ourselves in the middle of another transfer window frustrated at the speed at which Celtic are sanctioning deals for players to be brought to the football club. That is despite the managers comments at wanting the likes of Iheanacho and other summer signings in the door early to get a good pre season under their belt.
Every summer seems to follow the same pattern despite the Chairman stating that mistakes had been made but lessons had been learned. So far that looks like more talk from the hierarchy before season ticket renewals were due to be finalised. Ultimately, it looks like the way Celtic handles transfers will never change until the leadership team does. The comments from Michael Nicholson recently in Ireland back that way of thinking.
Worrying comments of acceptance from the CEO
Our CEO indicated that it was difficult to deal with agents while trying to compete with teams in England for signings. Of course it is. Aspects of securing new signings presents challenges that every club needs to overcome. That’s why the people running the club are paid huge salaries.. To overcome and combat these challenges to the benefit of Celtic Football Club. This defeatist attitude reminds me of the comments made by Ross Desmond at the ill fated AGM last year. It sounds like the club are saying this is the best we can do. If that’s the case, step aside and relinquish control to people who are capable of putting a vision in place that will help grow the club long term. A progressive transfer strategy, plans for the stadium and surrounding areas, a plan to further increase revenue and investment.
Instead of leaving transfer decisions late in the window. Not replacing key players before they are allowed to leave. Capping salaries and transfer fees at a level from 20 years ago.
Real change and fresh thinking at the club is required
Ultimately, this isn’t just about Michael Nicholson’s comments. We all know he isn’t making all the decisions for the direction of Celtic Football Club. Celtic’s leadership does not have the confidence of those who invest emotionally and financially in the club. The fans do not accept the current strategy or the way the club is being managed. Until the people at the top are replaced, we will see no meaningful change in direction or strategy. It’s time for the shareholders to mobilise and force meaningful change or we will continue to get smaller year on year as the landscape continues to evolve. Sadly it looks like we are heading for another season of conflict and division.
