“You maybe don’t realise how big it is” – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opens up on life at Parkhead

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has admitted he didn’t fully appreciate the sheer size of Celtic until he arrived in Glasgow, saying his time at the club gave him a new perspective on what football means to the supporters.

The former England international, who spent much of his career in the Premier League, revealed that playing south of the border doesn’t prepare you for the unique atmosphere that surrounds the Scottish champions.

“I just think I learned more about the club and what it means to people. I think when you play down in England for a lot of the time, you maybe don’t realise how big it is up here and how passionate it is.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain won’t be the last player to head north from England and be taken aback by the sheer size and demands of Celtic. We’ve seen several players make the same admission in the past after joining.

The midfielder also spoke about how grateful he was to have had the opportunity to represent Celtic.

“I’m just delighted that I got a chance to play for a massive club like this and experience something like we did last year.”

After spending most of his career at Arsenal and Liverpool, the former England international added “It was just fun to get back to a team that wins.”

No doubt a player of quality in his day, he had been without a club since leaving Turkish side Besiktas months before Celtic offered him a short term contract last season. Hopefully with a full pre season the former Liverpool man can show the fans exactly why Martin O’Neill brought him as part of the squad for another year.
