Who encouraged Everton’s interest in Alistair Johnston?
Everton’s pursuit of Alistair Johnston has been one of the summers main talking points. Everyone probably presumed that David Moyes had identified the Celtic right back due to his previous connections with the club. It appears this might not be the case as former Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall has hinted that he may have played a role in putting the Canadian international on David Moyes’ radar.
Speaking on Open Goal, McCall explained that he spoke directly to the Everton manager who asked him for a player recommendation with his budget being £8-10 million pounds. McCall has made no secret of his admiration of Johnston in the past so it’s very possible he was the one who recommended the right back to David Moyes.
Johnston’s reputation continues to grow
It is no surprise to Celtic fans that Johnston is attracting interest from the Premier League. Since arriving at Celtic, the Canadian has established himself as one of the leagues most consistent players.
His performances have been built on reliability as much as quality. This has helped Johnston become one of the first names on the Celtic team sheet. His impressive displays for Canada at the World Cup have only increased his profile, making interest in him from down south inevitable.
Celtic holding firm
Despite the growing speculation, Celtic have shown little desire to part with one of their most dependable performers at this stage of the season.
With Johnston under contract for another three years, the Scottish champions are under no pressure to sell. Especially with the crucial Champions League playoff coming up, Johnston will be staying a Celtic player until the club’s valuation is met. Which is likely to be more than the £8-10 million Everton have budgeted for that position.
Supporters will hope he stays
Whether Ian McCall’s recommendation ultimately leads to a transfer remains to be seen. What is certain is that Johnston’s stock continues to rise.
For Celtic supporters, however, the hope will be that those conversations remain exactly that—and that one of the club’s most influential players is still wearing green and white when the transfer window closes in September. Whether that’s the case or not we’ll have to see.
